Dear colleagues and friends,

13th Bryan Warren School Pathology will be held in Sarajevo on November 2-3, 2019 organized jointly by the British Division of the International Academy of Pathology (BDIAP) and the Association of Basic Medical Sciences of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The main topic of the School will be neuropathology, a challenging field in the diagnostic pathology. Each year distinguished pathologists provided by the BDIAP teach at BWSP, and this year we are delighted to host Professor Sebastian Brandner from UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, University College London, UK, and Professor Silvia Marino (Barts and The London School of Medicine, Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS Trust).

The School objectives remain the same as all previous years: to give a brief overview of the most important topics in neuropathology and to cover the practical issues, particularly those relevant for young specialists and residents in pathology as well as for clinicians.

We sincerely hope that the School again shall meet your expectations and it will certainly depend on your active participation.

NEW: Please note that you are welcome to submit a difficult or interesting case in neuropathology (5-7 minutes PowerPoint presentation) and if selected, present it, and discuss with our lecturers and audience. The number of presentations is limited and the authors of the selected ones will be notified on 15 October the latest. The presentations are to be submitted to bp@bosnianpathology.org.
THE BEST CASE WILL BE AWARDED A CERTIFICATE AND 50 EUR.

09.00-09.45	Fundamentals of genetics and epigenetics (S. Marino) Summary of advances in concepts and diagnostic tools for an integrated molecular diagnosis
09.45-10.45	Adult brain tumours: Classification of gliomas with conventional biomarkers (S. Brandner) Focus on adult gliomas, including an overview of major changes in the 2016 WHO classification and their further refinement, as proposed in the cIMPACT-NOW statements. The lecture will cover criteria for an integrated histological and molecular diagnosis in the most common gliomas and the most relevant biomarkers: IDH, histone, BRAF, TERT, EGFR.
10.45-11.05	Coffee break
11.05-11.50	Adult brain tumours: Classification of intrinsic and extrinsic brain tumours with conventional and advanced biomarkers (S. Brandner) This module will provide information of the molecular classification of rarer intrinsic tumours and of meningiomas and other extrinsic tumours. It would also cover advanced diagnostics using epigenetic profiling. Specifically, the role of MGMT promoter methylation, low-grade gliomas with map kinase pathway alteration is, ependymomas and the molecular diagnostics with methylation array
11.50-12.35	Paediatric brain tumours (S. Marino) Focus on paediatric tumours, which are distinct entities, underpinned by different mutations, some of which therapeutically actionable and requiring a bespoke diagnostic stratification.
12.35-13.30	Lunch
13.30-14.30	Interactive slide seminar: Brain tumours (S. Brandner and S. Marino) Examples of adult and paediatric brain tumour cases with study of histological slides and review of results of molecular tests. The session will be virtual and interactive, allowing attendees to login into a teaching platform and browse the cases ahead of the session, with discussion during the session.
14.30-15.15	Transmissible proteopathies and neurodegeneration (S. Brandner) This lecture will provide the concept of protein misfolded in common neurodegenerative diseases and evidence for human transmission of misfolded proteins. There will be a focus on amyloid beta, tau and prions, but also encompassing synuclein and TDP 43
15.15-15.35	Coffee break
15.35-16.35	Slide seminar neuropathology of the elderly: Neurodegeneration and stroke, virtual and interactive session with diagnostic examples (S. Brandner) This interactive virtual slide resource will show examples of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and examples of acute and chronic ischaemic stroke.
